Starting January 22, 2018, there are new rules regarding air travel. Of course you will need a passport when traveling from outside the U.S., however, passengers who have driver's licenses issued by a state that is not yet compliant with the REAL ID Act will need to show an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel. Please see TSA's website for a list of acceptable forms of identification. Passengers who have licenses issued by a state that is compliant or that has an extension to become compliant with REAL ID requirements may continue to use their licenses as usual. For a list of states already in compliance or with an extension visit DHS's REAL ID webpage. Please note that the current state extensions expires October 10, 2018.
Plan early if you live in one of these states and apply for a new or renewed passport right away.
If you live inside the United States, visit the official Department of State U.S. Passport page for instructions.
If you live outside of the United States, please check for the passport application rules for your country.
